In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Building on the principle of “leaving no one behind”, the new Agenda emphasises a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all.
The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. The 17 Goals are all interconnected.
UN World Commission on Environment and Development’s definition: “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. One must not forget the word ‘development’. As Brundtland Commission said: “development is the process of furthering people’s well-being”
